Not too long ago I was looking to get some work done on my chimney from a local contractor that I had used over the years. I performed an online search for his company but couldn’t find a number to call.
A couple of weeks later, I happened to run into the owner at a local supermarket and inquired about how things were going, to which he replied that he was closing his business.
This came as a surprise to me as his company did outstanding work, enjoyed a good reputation and had been operating in our community since 1979.
The owner shared that while he enjoyed the work and valued his relationships with his customers, after 35 years, he was ready for a change. And without a family member interested in taking over his small business, his plan was just to shutter it.
My initial reaction was one of disappointment over this established local business simply disappearing. But oddly, as we continued to chat, I found that feeling giving way to an increasing sense of intrigue about the business itself and the opportunity this presented to a younger family man like myself.
As the days passed, I became more and more excited about the idea of growing a business on the foundation this man had put in place. After talking it through with my wife, I called and asked if he would consider selling his business to us.
Today, my wife and I are the proud owners of that business and loving it.

During the process of purchasing his company, I woke up in the night many times thinking about how fortunate it was that we met in that supermarket, that we struck up that conversation and that it led to a new beginning for each of us. I thought about how many millions of small to medium sized business owners and prospective buyers are in similar situations. I thought about what I could do to help recreate that “supermarket moment” for them.
